Putting an end to side stitches

At one point or another, every runner has encountered side stitches – a sharp pain right below your rib cage.

There are a couple theories, but conventional wisdom is they are caused by a muscle spasm of the diaphragm.

Most recommend stopping running and walking until the pain subsides, unless you are in a race.

But there are also some ways that you can help prevent them from even appearing. About.com’s sports medicine section provides these tips for preventing a side stitch:

  • Time your pre-race meal to allow it to digest prior to the event
  • Avoid drinking reconstituted fruit juices and beverages high in carbohydrate and osmolality before and during exercise
  • Stretching may relieve the pain of a stitch. Raise your right arm straight up and lean toward the left. Hold for 30 seconds, release, then stretch the other side.
  • Slow down your pace until pain lessens.
  • Massage or press on the area with pain. Bend forward to stretch the diaphragm and ease the pain.

Local runners find success at Boston Marathon

Congrats to all the local runners who ran in the Boston Marathon!

A list of local runners is available here: http://www.publicopiniononline.com/ci_20409421/running-locals-find-success-boston

It was one of the hottest on record, and times were some of the slowest on record, but there were some good showings by locals.

Chambersburg’s Laurie Dymond and Tim Schuler, who race for the Cumberland Valley Athletic Club, finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 45-49 age group. Schuler had the best overall finish of anyone in the area, taking 198th place with a time of 2 hours, 49 minutes and 14 seconds.

Runner shares incredible story of recovery

In case you missed it, John Ulsh of Carlisle spoke last week in Chambersburg.

He was seriously injured in a crash in December 2007 near Mercersburg and given a 3 percent chance of living. He wasn’t even supposed to live, but now he’s able to work out and even return to running.

He had an incredible story, though it was hard to do it justice in a single, on-deadline story.

If you get a chance, check out his website APerfectRun.com, which has much more of his story, along with photos and other links.
